Methodology of Study
First we identified a shortlist of over 500 WordPress plugins that employ AI technology, using a combination of ChatGPT, Google search and the WordPress plugin directory.
Using SEMrush we then selected 40 top plugins, and sorted them into 8 categories;

Over the last 12 months, the dataset we analysed has provided valuable insights into traffic trends across the observed period. Starting in December 2023, the websites recorded a total of 26.4 million visitors, which served as the baseline for our study.
By the end of the period, November 2024, the total monthly visits declined slightly to 25.4 million, reflecting a surprising 1 million visitor reduction over the year, given the increasing hype around AI technology in general.
Interestingly, the overall traffic trends were far from linear, with notable fluctuations across several months. The peak traffic was observed in January 2024, when visits spiked to 30.9 million, reflecting a significant 17% month-on-month growth from December 2023. However, this surge was followed by a sharp decline of 12.9% in February 2024, where visits dropped to 26.9 million, more in line with the baseline levels.

The data reveals some important trends across the year. Following the January peak, traffic experienced a steady decline through March (24.7M) before showing signs of recovery in April (25.4M). This suggests a cooling-off period after the initial surge, which could be attributed to seasonal or market-specific factors.
The second-highest traffic month, July 2024, saw visits climb to 27.7 million, fuelled by steady growth from May (26.3M) and June (26.8M). However, this mid-year recovery was followed by another drop in August, where traffic dipped to 24.9 million, a decline of 10.1% compared to the previous month.
The final months of the study, from September to November, showed a gradual stabilisation, with traffic hovering around 23.7M to 26.0M visitors. While this is lower than the peak observed earlier in the year, it indicates a return to a more stable baseline, reflecting consistent user engagement.
