First we identified a shortlist of over 500 WordPress plugins that employ AI technology, using a combination of ChatGPT, Google search and the WordPress plugin directory.

Using SEMrush we then selected 40 top plugins, and sorted them into 8 categories;

Our study of 40 AI-powered WordPress plugins revealed several important findings:

1. Total Traffic & Leading Plugins

• The selected plugins amassed over 315 million visits over 12 months, averaging 26.25 million monthly visits.
• LiveChat was the most visited plugin, generating 75 million visits, accounting for 24% of total traffic.
• Elementor and Divi, leading Website Builder plugins, collectively secured over 90 million visits, demonstrating the high demand for intuitive site-building solutions.

2. Traffic Trends & Seasonal Shifts

• The highest monthly traffic was recorded in January 2024 (30.9M visits), reflecting a 17% increase from the previous month.
• Traffic then declined 12.9% in February before stabilising mid-year.
• The latter months showed a return to baseline levels (23.7M – 26.0M visits), suggesting a core audience remains engaged over time.

3. Top Traffic Gainers & Losers

• LiveChat led the traffic growth, adding 1.17 million visits over the year.
• ZipWP (223.9K), AIOSEO (154.5K), and Yoast SEO (37.4K) also experienced steady growth, reflecting continued demand for SEO and website-building solutions.
• Rank Math (-416.6K), TinyPNG (-282.6K), and Elementor (-28.4K) saw traffic declines, suggesting shifts in user preferences or increased competition.

4. Geographic Interest & Market Expansion

• India led global traffic (11.1M visits), followed by the United States (9.8M visits) and Brazil (3.2M visits).
• Emerging markets, including Kenya, Pakistan, and Cameroon, demonstrated growing interest in AI-powered WordPress plugins.
• China ranked lower than expected (1M visits), likely due to local regulations and preference for domestic tools.

5. Traffic Channels & Audience Behaviour

• Direct traffic (48.58%) was the leading source, highlighting strong brand recognition.
• Referral traffic (24.41%) and organic search (23.85%) indicated the impact of SEO and third-party endorsements.
• Social media and paid channels contributed minimally, representing potential areas for future growth.

6. Device & Demographics Insights

• 84.34% of traffic came from desktop users, reinforcing WordPress as a desktop-first platform.
• Mobile traffic (15.66%) suggests growing adoption of mobile-friendly tools but remains secondary.
• Traffic was nearly gender-balanced, with 52.77% male and 47.23% female users, reflecting broad market appeal.

7. Referring Domains & SEO Authority Growth

• LiveChat (+141,048 referring domains) and Elementor (+19,115) saw significant increases in authority and external links.
• Smaller but fast-growing plugins, like Tranzly (+4,707) and ZipWP (+620), highlighted rising interest in AI-powered automation.
• Plugins with declining or stagnant referring domains may face competitive challenges or reduced link-building efforts.

Over the last 12 months, the dataset we analysed has provided valuable insights into traffic trends across the observed period. Starting in December 2023, the websites recorded a total of 26.4 million visitors, which served as the baseline for our study.

By the end of the period, November 2024, the total monthly visits declined slightly to 25.4 million, reflecting a surprising 1 million visitor reduction over the year, given the increasing hype around AI technology in general.

Interestingly, the overall traffic trends were far from linear, with notable fluctuations across several months. The peak traffic was observed in January 2024, when visits spiked to 30.9 million, reflecting a significant 17% month-on-month growth from December 2023. However, this surge was followed by a sharp decline of 12.9% in February 2024, where visits dropped to 26.9 million, more in line with the baseline levels.

Identifying Key Trends and Shifts

The data reveals some important trends across the year. Following the January peak, traffic experienced a steady decline through March (24.7M) before showing signs of recovery in April (25.4M). This suggests a cooling-off period after the initial surge, which could be attributed to seasonal or market-specific factors.

The second-highest traffic month, July 2024, saw visits climb to 27.7 million, fuelled by steady growth from May (26.3M) and June (26.8M). However, this mid-year recovery was followed by another drop in August, where traffic dipped to 24.9 million, a decline of 10.1% compared to the previous month.

The final months of the study, from September to November, showed a gradual stabilisation, with traffic hovering around 23.7M to 26.0M visitors. While this is lower than the peak observed earlier in the year, it indicates a return to a more stable baseline, reflecting consistent user engagement.

Seasonal or Structural Drivers Behind Traffic Trends

January 2024 Growth (17%):

This remarkable increase could reflect the typical post-holiday surge as businesses and users ramp up activities after the December lull. It may also coincide with marketing campaigns or product launches that generate heightened interest.

February 2024 Decline (-12.9%):

The sharp drop from January’s peak could be attributed to the normalisation of traffic after seasonal highs. It’s also possible that heightened engagement in January reflects temporary users who didn’t continue beyond initial visits.

Mid-Year Recovery and Subsequent Dip:

Traffic in the middle of the year, especially June and July, indicates renewed interest or potential external factors driving growth, such as targeted campaigns or improved user experiences. However, August’s decline suggests a potential seasonal effect or user fatigue.

End-of-Year Stabilisation:

The final months show relatively stable figures, pointing to a consistent user base that may be less affected by seasonal factors. This could reflect the “true” baseline level of engagement for these websites.

Perspectives on Declines and Recovery

The fluctuations in monthly traffic offer several perspectives on the potential drivers of these changes:

• SolidWP showed significant growth, increasing by 9,765 domains, reflecting its growing importance in the Security and Site Protection space.

While smaller in absolute numbers, some newer or niche plugins achieved remarkable growth rates:

• AiBud WP, from the Content Creation and Writing category, grew from 15 to 107 referring domains, achieving a 613% increase, suggesting increasing interest and adoption in a previously underrepresented space.
• ZipWP, a Website Builder plugin, grew from 197 to 817, marking a 315% increase, showcasing its rising influence in a competitive category.
